Amazu cacao
This beautiful and soft cacao grows in the Los Ríos region of Ecuador. It is a unique variety that had almost disappeared, but was reintroduced in a research project to preserve its old and distinctive flavours. The cacao grows near a village called Amazu, and the locals also call it Amazu.
cacao grows in a beautiful and clean environment, with a wide variety of plants and trees, such as macadamia nuts, bamboo, avocado, plantain, coconut palms, pineapples, tahitian lemons, mango, Amazon cinnamon, and many other wonderful plants that cross-pollinate to give cacao its unique flavour.
Grown organically in Los Rios, Ecuador
Flavour: flowery and nutty (typical of the Arriba national cocoa).
At the time, the Ecuadorian government supported the cultivation of the new and disease-resistant (but much more mild-tasting) CN51 cacao , which led to the disappearance of much of the traditional national cocoa. This happened at a time when many farms were struggling with the monilla plant disease, which wiped out much of the plantations.
This old cacao has been forgotten for years, so we're especially happy to be able to offer it again! - A great choice for ceremonial cocoa.
